Different universities have different admissions
requirements. General admissions requirements include:
-
High school graduation
-
Sufficient entrance grade (marks) – varies
depending on universities
-
Completion of specific courses in your
secondary school studies – these are usually outlined in the brochure of
each university.
-
English language proficiency (if applicable)
-
To apply for any university, you need to
fill out an application form. For students attending secondary schools
in Canada, application forms for local universities can easily be obtained
from your secondary schools (from the school advisors particularly). For
all other universities within Canada, application forms are usually available
in:
-
Conselling offices in your secondary school
upon request
-
Undergraduate admission office in each
post-secondary institutions.
-
Internet (if applicable)
-
Some universities allow applications through
the World Wide Web. Procedures are simply and easy: go to the homepage
of the institution(s) you are interested in, find the link where it will
lead you to the application page, follow the instructions and fill in all
the information as required.
-
Application fees are applicable. They vary
among institutions and range from $20 to $200 and up. Normally if you are
applying for an institution outside Canada, the application fee will expect
to be more expensive. Your application will not be processed until the
institutions receive your application fee.
-
There is no limitation on the number of
universities you apply for. However, once you are admitted to an institution,
you’ll have to pay a certain amount of money, usually called "deposit"
or "confirmation fee", which indicate that you’ll be attending that institutions.
If the fee is not paid after the due date, your seat will then be taken
from you!
-
Deadline for application varies depending
on the institutions. Generally, application forms and application fees
are due at the end of February for early admission*, or the end of April
for an entrance to the institutions.
* early admission is a special admission
status in which the institutions will process your application ahead of
time (mainly based on your grade 11 and the 1st and/or 2nd
term of grade 12 marks)
-
Each institution will notify you whether
or not you have been accepted to the institutions by mail. In some institutions,
there is an enquiry line where you can call and ask for the application
status.
-
Your application will be evaluated once
the following documentation has been received:
-
application form
-
official transcripts from all secondary
or post secondary institutions attended (and translations if required)
-
application fee
-
document evaluation fee (if applicable)
-
TOEFL (if required) etc.
-
Outline of activities (if your education
has been interrupted)
-
Many institutions will require a proof
of your English proficiency, if your primary language is not English. As
a general rule, if you have been in a school for the past 5 years where
the language of instruction was English you will not be required to submit
the above proofs. Various "proofs" will be required and some of them include:
-
TOEFL
-
International English Language Testing
System (IELTS)
-
LPI
