Admission Requirements:
- Secondary school graduation
- Required courses:
- Math 11
- Language 11 (beginner’s Language 11 may be used)
- Science 11 (ie. Biology 11, Chemistry 11, Earth Science 11 or Physics 11)
- 3 additional grade 12 courses selected from the following:
- Calculus 12
- Biology 12
- Computer Science 12
- Chemistry 12
- Civilization 12
- English Literature 12
- French 12
- Geography 12
- Geology 12
- German 12
- History 12
- Russian 12
- Japanese 12
- Latin 12
- Mandarin 12
- Mathematics 12
- Physics 12
- Punjabi 12
- Spanish 12
- Survey Math 12
- Western Civilization 12
- Writing 12
- Depending on the faculty you are applying for, you may have to complete some specific courses as well. For example, you will need Chemistry 12 and Physics 12 if you are applying for Engineering Science. However, you can also choose to take these beginning level courses in University if you happen to switch your field of interest during your university life, and is missing one or more required grade 11/grade 12 level courses.

You may be granted credits for some of the first year courses in universities if you have taken AP (Advanced Placement) course(s) and have obtained a grade of 4 or 5 in AP exam(s).
- If you've completed the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, you'll be admitted subject to a minimum overall score of 27. Universities will grant transfer credit for some higher level subjects passed with a grade of 4 or higher, to a maximum of 30 semester hours but do not grant transfer credit for subsidiary level subjects.
- If you have an incomplete or partial IB program, universities will consider you for admission on the basis of secondary school graduation, and will grant transfer credit for some higher level subjects with a grade of 5 or higher.
Minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) required:
- Different faculties have different entrance GPA that you have to achieve.
- Here are some ideas of the minimum average you need for admission to some of the institutions in British Columbia:
- Simon Fraser University
- Minimum average: 67% calculated on four courses – English 12, and the best three additional academic Grade 12 subjects.
- University of British Columbia
- A minimum average of 67% is required for admission to all programs.
- Due to limited enrolment, a higher average is usually required in most programs in any institutions.
English Language requirement:
- These are different kind of tests to prove your English proficiency, they include:
- TOEFL -- Test of English as a Foreign Language
- IELTS -- International English Language Testing System
- MELAB -- Michigan English Language Assessment Battery
- Who need these tests?

If your primary language (first language) is not English or if you have not had five years of full-time education in English in Canada or the equivalent in another country where English is the principal language, you will need supporting documents to prove your English proficiency.
What do I need to get in these tests?-
This depends on which institutions you are applying for. Some of the requirements are as followed:
- Simon Fraser University
- A minimum TOEFL (computed based) score of 230 including a minimum essay score of 4.5 or
- TOEFL (computed based) with a minimum score of 250, or
- nternational English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum score of 6.5.
- University of British Columbia
- TOEFL (computed based) with a minimum score of 230 (or 237 for program in the faculty of Arts), or
- a score of at least 90 on MELAB, or
- an overall band score of 6.5 with no band lower than 6 on IELTS.
- Note: these tests have to be taken within two years prior to application for admission
- Where can I apply for an placement for these tests?
- Application packages can be obtained in public libraries, your secondary schools, and most post-secondary institutions.
Preparations towards entering universities:
- Do well in your secondary school studies!
- Submit your application before the deadlines!!
- Always check the latest requirements for each institutions that you are interested in. As enrolment is limited, a higher average is usually required.
- Make sure the courses you are taking in secondary school are applicable to the institutions you are applying for.
- Plan ahead!
- Grades in grade 11 and first two terms (or first semester) of grade 12 are the most crucial. Plan extra effort!!
